Assistance with Compliance to NFPA 652
National Fire Protection Association Standard on the Fundamentals of Combustible Dusts

Most any material that is combustible in a solid mass form, is explosive  when in the powdered form, typically 425 microns and smaller ( 0.165 inches or US Standard 40 Mesh ).  This includes most any agricultural product, and processed products: sugar, starch, milk powder, pectin, fertilizer, nutraceuticals, plastic, and metal powders.

Baghouse Duct Design dot Com™ is available to assist you with the Dust Hazard Analysis (DHA) required by NFPA 652 for facilities processing combustible dusts. Per NFPA 652, the DHA is best completed as a team effort between plant and corporate engineers and consultants such as Baghouse Duct Design dot Com™. We are available to assist with obtaining a confidential test of your dust to determine the Kst value (explosibility), to properly size explosive venting per NFPA-68 or explosion suppression per NFPA-69.  We can assist with the specification and/or procurement of explosion venting or suppression for both new equipment and as a retrofit to existing in place process equipment.

One requirement of NFPA 652 is to assure that your dust is conveyed at high enough velocity to prevent dust from settling in the duct system.  These velocities must be documented, and periodically tested to assure that minimal duct velocities are maintained.  Each collection point must be marked with its design intake air flow volume, so it can be verified during maintenance inspections.  OSHA inspectors do inspect duct internals for combustible dust build up!  Baghouse Duct Design dot Com™ can design a proper duct system, and provide you with the documentation required of NFPA 652 and assist your maintenance personnel with establishing a program to periodically verify that minimal air flow volumes are being met.
